Welcome to the "Serial" listening podcast

Hi everyone,

I'm so excited that we've decided to do this activity during our lessons. I think it's going to be really effective, and I'm sure you're all soon to be as hooked as I am!

To start things off, here's a link to an article that articulates something that I'd been struggling to say about the podcast myself. Enjoy!

  1. Episode 1:
I am not sure, if Adnan is guilty or not. I think, there is no one, who really think that he is guilty.
Except for Jay. But maybe he is the murderer and wants to avert suspicion from himself.
So I think, either Adnan or Jay is the murderer of Hae. My feelings say, that Adnan is innocent. Many people said, that they cannot imagine, that Adnan could have done a cruel think like this. And for example Asia testified that she saw Adnan at the time the murder took place. And I think it is strange, that no lawyer ever record her statement. I think the police and the lawyers took the easiest way to close this case and trusted in the statement of Jay.

  2. Episode 2:
I do not think, that Adnan is guilty. I think, the reason that Adnan should had killed Hae (Adnan was hurt by Hae, because he broke up with him) is not right. Of course everyone is hurt, when a relationship ends like this, but that is life. And everyone, who was interviewed in this episode said, that Adnan was not that distraught. He dated other girls and as I could understand it, Adnan and Hae never had a big argument because of the breakup.
I think that the police and the judge focused on the wrong things. For example the statement of the English teacher. She said, that Adnan had a “dark side”. But as she mentioned in this episode, each student of her had this. So Adnan was just a normal student.
And relating to Hae`s diary, I think, that none of her notes say, that she was afraid or bugged of Adnan. She was a normal teenager with normal problems at this age.
And I do not think, that Adnan would kill Hae, because she distract him from his religion. Adnan dated girls before the relationship with Hae and after the breakup. So she has nothing to do with it.

  3. Episode 1
The first episode includes interviews with many classmates, friends of Adnan and friends of Hae. These give a lot of information and statements on this case, which did not harmonize with each other. Therefore, it is really difficult to make a statement, whether Adnan is really guilty.

What I find very interesting is that Jay says he has Adnan helped to bury the dead body of Hae in the Leakin Park. With this statement he makes himself guilty. In addition, he also tells Jenn that Adnan Hae killed.

According to Asia and Rabia Adnan would never kill someone. When the murder took place, Adnan was seen in the library.

My first idea is that Adnan is not guilty. There's more to it. But that´s just my first impression.

  4. Episode 2
In this episode, it is more about feelings. Actually, I'm more and more sure that Adnan is not guilty. The relationship between Adnan and Hae has ended and Adnan was not happy, but he would never kill Hae. There are two teenagers and we know how much emotional turmoil have teenagers. So I think that the statements were made are not really meaningful.

I am very curious how the story goes on and if I will change my mind yet.

  6. EP. 1

In my opinion it isn´t possible to say after the first episode who ist guilty because you have less information.
At the beginning of the episode some aspects about Adnan made me thinking that he could be guilty.
But for example it seems to me that the end of the relationship between him and Hae couldn´t be a reason for him to kill her. Of couse, it wasn´t nice for Adnan but I´m sure that he wouldn´t murder his forner girlfriend.
So this major argument doesn´t exsist for me at the end.

I think that someone completly else is involved in this murder otherwise the story isn´t interesting enough for the listeners.

So after the first episode I have really no idea who killed Hae.

  7. EP. 2

After the second episode I still don´t know who is the murderer.
In this episode it is told a lot about Adnons feelings and his family. For example that his parents saw him at the homecomming-party, although he wasn´t allowed to be there.
This aspect together with other explanations shows to me that Adnan´s family ist stricter than I assumed.
But for me, the family-background isn´t a reason for him to kill Hae.

  10. Episode 1:

It's really hard to say if Adnan Syed is the murderer of Hae Min Lee. You get some Information about the alibis of his classmates and some of these don't agree with each other.

My first impression of the story is that Adnan isn't involved in the murder case but I wouldn't vouch for it. There are too little Information.

I think it's not the motivation of Adnan to kill her because Hae is his former girlfriend. He seems to a nice guy but we'll see.

  11. Episode 2:

After this episode I still think that Adnan didn't kill her. They kept secret the relationship from their parents. So Hae probably broke up with Adnan because of their parents. I Think there were religious reesons for that.

The police is focussed on him because he's currently the only one who COULD have a reason to kill her but I think he isn't guilty.
